South Africa is one of the oldest wine countries outside of Europe and is presently the 10th largest wine country in the world. Particularly since the abolition of apartheid in the 1980s the wine quality has improved and the wine export has increased.
The South African wine districts are mainly located around Cape Town. The Stellenbosch province, which is one of the most well-known districts in the country, produces many of the country’s finest red wines. The climate in the area is humid, similar to the northern Mediterranean basin. Paarl, which is further in the country, also produces top-quality wine.
